Stop. Take a deep breath. Close your eyes for a few minutes and open your mind. Now open your eyes again and SEE.
These are basic steps to being able to find beauty that is around you. When you open your eyes and see again, see what you are actually looking at. If done outside and the first thing you see is a tree, don't just look at it. Really see it. Each tree has dozens of branches and even more branches that come off of each of those. There are hundreds of leaves. Don't just see them as a whole. Take notice of each one individually. When you have done that, start to take notice of combined detail. The way the bunches of leaves on each branch make a shaded area on top of another bunch. Is the breeze blowing? Notice how the leaves move together as a whole and individually or in groups.
When we look at everyday objects, our minds register the detail we see briefly, and then dismiss it, moving on to register the next piece of information. Add this to the background noise of our thoughts, and we lose a lot of what we see. We are constantly in a rush that we often forget to look around and see the beauty the world has to offer. I think it is important to stop and make an effort to see this, even if just for a few moments. It's like a breath of fresh air to the mind and the soul. It allows us a mental break from our everyday stresses and we can focus on something that can offer so much peace. The next time you feel like life is overwhelming you, or you are just having a terrible day, give these basic steps a try. It just might change your perspective, for a little while at least.
